Sisters of Carmel of St. Teresa

Carmel of St. Teresa

The Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, commonly known as the Carmelites, started in the 13th century on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land, near the spring associated with the prophet Elijah. This ancient group emphasizes both quiet reflection and active service. The first Carmelites lived as hermits in the mountains, dedicating themselves to a deep life of prayer. Their strong commitment to praying inspires them to help others, fueled by their love for God. In the 16th century, St. Teresa of Avila made significant changes to the Order, helping it spread from Spain to many other parts of the world.

The Carmel of St. Teresa in Alhambra was founded in 1913, when five nuns from St. Louis, Missouri, relocated to Los Angeles to begin their Carmelite life in Southern California. For ten years, the sisters lived in rented homes in Los Angeles while waiting for their current monastery to be built in Alhambra. They chose the site in Alhambra for its beauty.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Carmelite Nuns, who have chosen to surrender their worldly possessions to lead a life of prayer, contemplation, and living according to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They are entirely devoted to loving and serving God. We appreciate their sacrifices and their commitment to sharing God’s light and love with the world.
